    Introgression in interspecific hybrids of lily

    In order to introduce new desirable characters into the cultivar assortment of lily a range of interspecific crossing barriers has to be overcome. By using various pollination and embryo rescue techniques pre- and postfertilization barriers were overcome and a range of wide interspecific lily hybrids between species and cultivars from the different sections of the genus Lilium could be made. Important breakthroughs include the development of the LA- (L. longiflorum x Asiatic hybrids), the LO- (L. longiflorum x Oriental hybrids) and the OA- (Oriental x Asiatic hybrids) hybrids. In general wide interspecific lily hybrids show F1-sterility. Using somatic chromosome doubling techniques (mitotic polyploidization) tetraploids with restored fertility can be produced from these diploid hybrids. An alternative method is the use of unreduced (or 2n) gametes (meiotic polyploidization), which are rarely found in some hybrids. Introgression of alien chromosome segments from donor species into recipient cultivar through backcrossing of F1 hybrid was studied using in situ hybridization techniques (GISH). Mitotic polyploidization showed no homoeologous recombinations between the parental genomes whereas meiotic polyploidization detected many. The use of 2n-gametes seems to be the most promising way for the introgression of desirable characters

    Use of 2n gametes for inducing intergenomic recombination in lily hybrids

    Genetic recombination is an important pre-requisite for transferring specific genetic traits across distantly related plant species. With a view to transfer some of the desirable characters like resistances against viruses, Fusarium and Botrytis, besides many horticultural traits, we have made interspecific hybrids between different species of lilies (Lilium, 2n=2x=24). The F1 hybrids in all these cases are totally sterile because of the lack of chromosome pairing. Traditional method of somatic chromosome doubling (mitotic polyploidization) can produce fertile allotetraploids. But, because of strict autosyndetic pairing in allotetraploids, no genetic recombination occurs in the progenies. In order to overcome this difficulty, we have selected 2n gamete producing F1 hybrids of different Lilium species and used them successfully for sexual polyploidization (meiotic polyploidization). An important feature of meiosis in the F1 hybrids is that a certain amount of homoeologous chromosome pairing does occur in them. When 2n gametes originate from such F1 hybrids through first division restitution (FDR) they are expected to possess recombinant chromosomes. Cytological analyses, using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), of the sexual polyploid progenies have proved that considerable amount of intergenomic recombinant chromosomes can be recovered in the chromosome complements. One example of the sexual polyploid progenies from Oriental x Asiatic hybrid lilies possessing intergenomic recombinant chromosomes will be illustrated and discussed

    Sliding blocks with random friction and absorbing random walks

    With the purpose of explaining recent experimental findings, we study the distribution A(λ)A(\lambda) of distances λ\lambda traversed by a block that slides on an inclined plane and stops due to friction. A simple model in which the friction coefficient μ\mu is a random function of position is considered. The problem of finding A(λ)A(\lambda) is equivalent to a First-Passage-Time problem for a one-dimensional random walk with nonzero drift, whose exact solution is well-known. From the exact solution of this problem we conclude that: a) for inclination angles θ\theta less than \theta_c=\tan(\av{\mu}) the average traversed distance \av{\lambda} is finite, and diverges when θθc\theta \to \theta_c^{-} as \av{\lambda} \sim (\theta_c-\theta)^{-1}; b) at the critical angle a power-law distribution of slidings is obtained: A(λ)λ3/2A(\lambda) \sim \lambda^{-3/2}. Our analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulation, and are in partial agreement with the reported experimental results.     Enhanced critical current density in MgB2 superconductor via Si and C coadditions.

    In this study, nanosize Silicon and Carbon (Si+C) were reacted with MgB2 in order to enhance the critical current density. The polycrystalline bulks were synthesized by the direct in situ reaction method and their phase formation, crystal structure, and superconducting properties were evaluated. The enhanced relative peak intensity of Mg2Si and MgB4 indicates the formation of a large volume fraction of these two phases with increasing (Si+C) additions. The a-axis lattice parameter shrinks significantly while c-axis increases slightly. The estimated C doping level at B site increases, leading to a degradation of the superconducting transition temperature with increasing (Si+C) additions. By a reaction with (Si+C), the field dependence of critical current density is shown to enhance at both 5 K and 20 K

    “All citizens of the world can save a life” — The World Restart a Heart (WRAH) initiative starts in 2018

    “All citizens of the world can save a life”. With these words, the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) is launching the first global initiative – World Restart a Heart (WRAH) – to increase public awareness and therefore the rates of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for victims of cardiac arrest. In most of the cases, it takes too long for the emergency services to arrive on scene after the victim's collapse. Thus, the most effective way to increase survival and favourable outcome in cardiac arrest by two- to fourfold is early CPR by lay bystanders and by “first responders”. Lay bystander resuscitation rates, however, differ significantly across the world, ranging from 5 to 80%. If all countries could have high lay bystander resuscitation rates, this would help to save hundreds of thousands of lives every year. In order to achieve this goal, all seven ILCOR councils have agreed to participate in WRAH 2018. Besides schoolchildren education in CPR (“KIDS SAVE LIVES”), many other initiatives have already been developed in different parts of the world. ILCOR is keen for the WRAH initiative to be as inclusive as possible, and that it should happen every year on 16 October or as close to that day as possible. Besides recommending CPR training for children and adults, it is hoped that a unified global message will enable our policy makers to take action to address the inequalities in patient survival around the world.Revisión por pare

    Scaling limit of virtual states of triatomic systems

    For a system with three identical atoms, the dependence of the ss-wave virtual state energy on the weakly bound dimer and trimer binding energies is calculated in a form of a universal scaling function. The scaling function is obtained from a renormalizable three-body model with a pairwise Dirac-delta interaction.     Bio-orthogonal Supramolecular Latching inside Live Animals and Its Application for in Vivo Cancer Imaging

    © 2019 American Chemical Society.Here, we demonstrate a supramolecular latching tool for bio-orthogonal noncovalent anchoring of small synthetic molecules in live animal models using a fully synthetic high-affinity binding pair between cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and adamantylammonium (AdA). This supramolecular latching system is small (∼1 kDa), ensuring efficient uptake into cells, tissues, and whole organisms. It is also chemically robust and resistant to enzymatic degradation and analogous to well-characterized biological systems in terms of noncovalent binding. Occurrence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between cyanine 3-CB[7] (Cy3-CB[7]) and boron-dipyrromethene 630/650X-AdA (BDP630/650-AdA) inside a live worm (Caenorhabditis elegans) indicates efficient in situ high-affinity association between AdA and CB[7] inside live animals. In addition, selective visualization of a cancer site of a live mouse upon supramolecular latching of cyanine 5-AdA (Cy5-AdA) on prelocalized CB[7]-conjugating antibody on the cancer site demonstrates the potential of this synthetic system for in vivo cancer imaging.     Slewing Mirror Telescope optics for the early observation of UV/optical photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts

    We report on design, manufacture, and testing of a Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT), the first of its kind and a part of Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory-pathfinder (UFFO-p) for space-based prompt measurement of early UV/optical light curves from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Using a fast slewing mirror of 150 mm diameter mounted on a 2 axis gimbal stage, SMT can deliver the images of GRB optical counterparts to the intensified CCD detector within 1.5∼1.8 s over ± 35 degrees in the slewing field of view. Its Ritchey-Chrétien telescope of 100 mm diameter provides a 17 × 17 arcmin2 instantaneous field of view.     Precipitate Redistribution During Creep of Alloy 617

    Nickel-based superalloys are being considered for applications within advanced nuclear power generation systems due to their high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Alloy 617, a candidate for use in heat exchangers, derives its strength from both solid solution strengthening and the precipitation of carbide particles. However, during creep, carbides that are supposed to retard grain boundary motion are found to dissolve and re-precipitate on boundaries in tension. To quantify the redistribution, we have used electron backscatter diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy to analyze the microstructure of 617 after creep testing at 900 and 1000°C. The data were analyzed with respect to location of the carbides (e.g., intergranular vs. intragranular), grain boundary character, and precipitate type (i.e., Cr-rich or Mo-rich). We find that grain boundary character is the most important factor in carbide distribution; some evidence of preferential distribution to boundaries in tension is also observed at higher applied stresses. Finally, the results suggest that the observed redistribution is due to the migration of carbides to the boundaries and not the migration of boundaries to the precipitates

    FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium

    Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression. Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2. Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK
